Green Sustainability
In an effort to maintain our high level of quality and service we are pleased to share with you our Environmental Procedures and Green Initiatives.Maroma Complex is an ecological protected area, were motorized activities are not allowed at the beach.Our main road access was limited on size due to is located on the mangrove (which can not be removed, due to ecological government restrictions).All garden areas on property should filled out with vegetation of the area, so we can not set up grass as regular gardens.Our offices and business center have established a paper recycling program.The campaign “Leave A Green Print” Friends of Sian Kaan involves the following activities:Signage in areas dedicated to employees as remainders for best practices such as energy conservation (examples: turn off lights, turn off computers and unused equipment in employee areas/offices), water conservation, recycling, landscape conservation, flora and fauna conservation, general environmental education, etc.Secrets Maroma Beach has registered in the Rainforest- Alliance program which works with hotels, restaurants and other tourism businesses to help them improve their environmental, social and economic practices; business’s adoption of sustainability practices and help its managers understand what they are doing well and which areas need improvement. Audits cover topics such as clean technologies, waste management and recycling, carbon offsets, biodiversity conservation, cultural preservation, gender equality, administration and planning, service quality and green marketing. All modules meet Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria. Secrets Maroma Beach has been part of the MARTI program (MesoAmerican Reef Tourism Initiative) since 2010. We have had verifications and training for implementation of Best Practices aimed to reduce the consumption of energy and water, and to minimize the generation of solid waste, actions that result in environmental and economic benefits.The leading program of MARTI’s Hotel Component is the implementation of an Environmental Management System in hotels of the region. MARTI's goal is to integrate sound natural resources management and sustainable practices into tourism development and operations at all scales in the MesoAmerican Reef region by 2016, thereby ensuring the region's economic and environmental prosperity.The hotel is affiliated to the environmental management system MARTI (The Mesoamerican Reef Association), who has given us the foundations to qualify for a certification as a company of good environmental practices. •The hotel is responsible for separating their waste (plastic bottles, cardboard, aluminum, etc.) and refer them to a company dedicated to the recycle and reuse of waste. • Our rooms are equipped with sensors that allow energy savings when the guest is not in the room. •We have a water saving program, through a sign posted in the rooms for the use of towels and bathrobes (if they are hung, will be left in the room. If they are placed in the ground, will be replaced with new clean ones) .•We have installed water saving devices in faucets.•We have our own waste water treatment plant in the hotel, which allows reusing the water towards our grounds. •We conduct periodic audits to make sure our staff carries out good environmental practices in all departments. •We offer courses and speeches on environmental awareness to our staff. •We use biodegradable straws in our beach and pool bars.•We actively collaborate with an animal shelter in Cancun that provides medical assistance to sick and homeless animals found at the hotel or surrounding areas. •We do not permit nor rent motorized water facilities such as ATV´s in order to protect the reef barrier in our shores.
